Beginning Chip Carving

Ages: Adult (18 and up)

All levels are welcome. No experience required.

Students Please Bring:

  • Note taking materials.
  • (Optional) A snack and/or water bottle. Filtered water is available in the classroom.

Come gain an introduction to chip carving. Each student will be given a practice board as they work on knife holds and carving techniques. Pick from a selection of pre-printed designs on basswood blanks. Start with a practice board and then carve your chosen squares. Specific designs and chip carving books will be available for inspiration. Add a spray satin polyurethane finish, as time allows, and based on preference. This workshop is geared towards beginners, but those with experience are welcome to deepen their knowledge and learn new techniques.


All materials are included with a $10 PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees. 

Provided by Instructor: Chip carving knives, a practice board and two pre-printed blanks for carving (design is approx. 4inches by 4inches with square being closer to 5inches x 5inches). If students would like to purchase more square blocks to work on or bring home Jenny will have extras available.


About Instructor: Jenny Turner learned chip carving from Wayne Barton who trained in Switzerland and brought a resurgence of chip carving to the US. Jenny has attended many woodcarving classes at the John C. Campbell Folk School, and participated in the Lowcountry Woodcarving Club in Charleston, SC while they were active, among other woodcarving venues in the Southeast. Jenny moved to Murphy this spring after 43 years of living in Charleston, SC where she worked as a social worker and psychotherapist.
