Blacksmithing: Forged Rose

Location: This workshop takes place on the John C. Campbell Folk School Campus in the Clay Spencer Blacksmith Shop.  Campus Map 

Ages: Intergenerational (16 and up)

All levels are welcome. No experience required.

Students Please Bring:

  • All Cotton clothing.
  • Closed-toed shoes.
  • Eye protection and hearing protection (we have some shared ones in the shop for use).
  • Long hair must be tied back.
  • (Optional) A snack and/or water bottle. Filtered water is available in the classroom.

Forge a Rose from Steel using basic techniques and metalworking skills. Students will learn how to use the forge to heat and bend the pedals cut from a blank and attach it to a stem. We will also add leaves and texture to give life and add your own ideas to the piece. You'll leave with some new skills and nice keepsake!

There will be a 1-hour lunch break. Bring lunch or explore local dining options.

Instructor provided materials are included with an estimated $20 FEE PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. Material fees may change depending on the number of participants and price of materials at the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees.

About Instructor: Jody Durham is the current president of the Philip Simmons Artist Blacksmith Guild. He has 15 years of experience blacksmithing as a hobby and has taught several classes at the folk school and for his guild. His focus is traditional joinery and forged sculpture.
