Make a Chip Carved Ornament

10:00 a.m.  –  1:00 p.m.

Ages: Adult (18 and up)

All levels are welcome. No experience required.

Student Supplies:

  • A compass, ruler, mechanical pencil,
  • Bring your own chip carving knife (optional, instructor will have a limited number to borrow for the workshop).

Gain an introduction to chip carving while making a holiday ornament. Specific designs and chip carving books will be available for inspiration, allowing each student to pick from a selection of designs. Start with a practice board and then carve one side of your flat ornament. Add a hole for hanging and a spray satin polyurethane finish, as time allows.

There will be a 1-hour lunch break. Bring a lunch or explore local dining options.   

All materials are included with a $10 PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop.

About Instructor:

Jenny Turner learned chip carving from Wayne Barton who trained in Switzerland and brought a resurgence of chip carving to the US. Jenny has attended many woodcarving classes at the John C. Campbell Folk School, and participated in in Charleston, SC while they were active, among other woodcarving venues in the Southeast. Jenny moved to Murphy this spring after 43 years of living in Charleston, SC where she worked as a social worker and psychotherapist.
