All levels are welcome. No experience required.

Students Please Bring:

  • Dental floss
  • Scissors
  • Note taking materials.
  • (Optional) A snack and/or water bottle. Filtered water is available in the classroom.

Corn shuck Angels are a traditional Christmas ornament, or a special handmade gift. Make one (or two) in the morning and take home printed instructions for making a corn shuck doll.

Instructor provided materials are included with an estimated $5 FEE PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. Material fees may change depending on the number of participants and price of materials at the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees.

About Instructor: Ila Hatter is an interpretive naturalist, artist, and wildcrafter who has taught the cultural heritage of native plants for over 30 years. She has appeared on CNN, NBC, A&E, national PBS, and on UNC-TV's Folkways, and she is among the women featured in the book Women of the Smokies. She has produced videos, Wild Edibles and Medicinals of Appalachia and Mountain Kitchen (filmed at the Folk School). Ila is the editor/publisher of Roadside Rambles, a wild foods cookbook, and editor of Plants of the Cherokee. A recipient of the Achievement in Cultural Preservation award from NC State University, she learned garden cultivation and the art of finger weaving from her adopted grandmother, a Cherokee elder.
