Modern Traditional Quilting
Instructor: Dana Bolyard
Weekend: March 11 & 12
10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Adult + 18
This class is for the experienced beginner.
Students should be able to set up, thread, and troubleshoot a home sewing machine and be able to sew straight and curved lines.
Today’s modern quilts have their roots in the quilts of our ancestors. From block design and settings to fabric selection and construction methods, the process is steeped in history. Quilters today can choose to recycle fabric scraps and old clothes as early American quilters did or take advantage of new fabric designs from modern quilt shops. Combining the two is a rewarding challenge!
This class will explore the traditional patchwork Log Cabin design and give it something new. We will talk about basic color theory and free-form cutting, planning and laying out compositions, using both old and new fabrics to combine traditional quilt blocks with a modern aesthetic.
There will be a 30-minute lunch break. Bring a sack lunch or explore local dining options.
Olive’s Porch will provide sewing machines, or you may choose to bring your own.
Supplies to bring:
- A large variety of fabric scraps in varying color, prints, and scale of print design.
Student are encouraged to visit a thrift/resale shop and find 100% cotton button down shirts in a variety of prints and colors. We will be making scrappy blocks, and the more variety the better. In the true spirit of quilting, bring some to share so as to increase everyone’s variety.
Students may choose to bring:
- Note-taking materials
*Masks are recommended but not required while participating in a workshop or event.
