Ages: Adults (18 and up)

All levels are welcome. No experience required.

Students Please Bring:

  • Note taking materials.
  • (Optional) carving glove. (Can be purchased at Olive’s Porch or the Craft Shop on campus)
  • (Optional)A snack and/or water bottle. Filtered water is available in the classroom.

Learn how to carve a butter knife out of green wood. In this workshop, you will learn basic knife skills for carving, tool care and safety, how to work with the grain of wood, and where to source green wood. I will talk about a couple different styles of carving and how to finish your piece with decorative techniques. Along with the skills to continue carving, you will leave with a functional hand carved butter knife!

All materials are included with a $15 FEE PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees. 

About Instructor: Callan Burton-Shore (she/her) is an ancestral skills teacher and traditional craftsperson. She teaches spoon carving, hide tanning, and other skills to children and adults across Western North Carolina. She has been carving spoons since she was 8 years old and has been carving professionally for the last three years. In addition to teaching her own classes, she teaches at the Green Wood Wrights Festival, Wild Abundance, Forest Floor Wilderness Programs, The Little Wild School, The Living Earth School, various earthskills gatherings, and beyond.
