Students Please Bring:

  • Note taking materials.
  • Digital camera/phone to record your layout and compare with results.
  • Bring leaves from home (with high tannin content) Florist, check grocery for Eucalyptus, Flowers not used in this workshop; Good leaves to bring: Causarina, Silk Oak, Castor Bean, Wild willow, Copper leaf, Green from strawberries, Maho leaves, Various leaves for sampling.
  • (Optional) A snack and/or water bottle. Filtered water is available in the classroom.

Using plants to dye and print on fiber with direct contact printing methods, participants will explore the alchemy of water, plant materials, heat, and metal. We will be creating samples and experimenting with different protein fibers (silk, wool). Participants will finish the class with beautiful prints on protein fibers. I will show you processes that have worked well for me and the equipment and bundling techniques that are used. The final project will be printing on a 14” x 72” silk scarf.

Students are asked to bring a variety of leaves to class, Emphasis will be placed on safety, best practice procedures, environmental factors and plant characteristics. This is a relaxed, fun-filled class so come prepared for the wonderful smells that can only come from eucalyptus, and other natural leaves and be open to the magic.

All materials are included with a $30 FEE PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees. 

About Instructor: Formerly an interior designer, a construction project manager, and then fine art gallery owner and director, Suzanne Connors has always loved art and textiles and has maintained an active fiber art studio since 2008. Suzanne’s teaching experience includes studio and professional practices at institutions throughout the U.S. These include The Arrowmont School of Art & Craft, (Gatlinburg, TN,) River Ridge Retreat Center, (Menominee, WI,) Carborro Art Center, (Carborro, NC,) Morakami Japanese Museum, (Palm Beach County, FL,) Foosaner Museum, (Melbourne, FL,) Lighthouse Art Center, (Tequesta, FL) and the Aya Fiber Studio; her own studio in Stuart Florida where she hosts national and international artists who give workshops to over 500 students from all over the country each year. Suzanne is the founder and past President of the Martin Artisans Guild and is also president of Florida SPIN (silk painters international) and South Florida Regional representative for Surface Design Association.
