Ages: Adult (18 and Up)

Experience Level: All skill levels are welcome. No experience required.

Students Please Bring:

  • A guitar in good condition, with strings and tuning pegs that work, and a fairly firm flat pick
  • A tuning device, or phone with tuning app
  • A recording device or cellphone voice recorder would be very helpful
  • Note taking materials
  • (Optional) A snack and/or water bottle. Filtered water is available in the classroom

Learn the basics of how the guitar works, and how to produce a clean sound. After establishing string names, we’ll approach a simple scale, and a couple of easy chords. If there is ample time, we’ll apply these chords to a familiar song,; being aware of a steady beat, and how to sense when a chord change is needed. Students will receive a chord chart, and exercises for further home study.

Material fees may change depending on the number of participants and price of materials at the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees.

About Instructor: Dawn Davis is a published composer and multi-instrumentalist. Her work has been contracted for documentaries such as "The Vaquero Series"; films by J&S Productions of Santa Barbara, CA. She has been active at the John C Campbell Folk School as a Contra Dance musician and as an Instructor for Tune and Song Writing; also performing on a regular basis for the Folk School’s Morningsong presentations.
