Olive's Porch believes that the classes, experiences, and skills we offer play a meaningful role in everyone's well-being. To make them as accessible as possible, our workshops are offered at three pricing levels, so each participant can choose the rate that feels right for them.

Tuition is a Sliding Scale Choose What Rate Fits for You:

·        Sponsorship $175 - For those who have enough to share

·        Standard $125 - Reflects the standard cost for this workshop

·         Scholarship $75 - For folks who would not have access to this workshop without sponsorship

Ages: Adult (18 and Up)

All levels are welcome. No experience required.

Location: This workshop takes place on the John C. Campbell Folk School Campus in the Woodturning Studio. It is number 24 on the  Campus Map

Students Please Bring:

  • Wear closed-toed shoes only!
  • No loose, flowing clothing and long hair must be tied back
  • We recommend that you leave jewelry at home; no jewelry on hands/arms while turning
  • Safety glasses and or face shields are to be worn while turning. These are available at each turning station, or you may bring your own
  • Dust masks are available in the studio or if you prefer, bring your own dust shield.
  • Ear plugs are also available in the studio or bring your own hearing protection of choice
  • Each turning station has a PowerMatic 3520C lathe, large/small chucks, and all necessary lathe equipment. Tool rolls are available and contain 9 tools: roughing gouge, 3/8” & ½” spindle/bowl gouges, scraper, parting tool, skew, and bedan. If you prefer, you may bring your own. (Label all personal tools with your name or initials)
  • Note taking materials.
  • (Optional) A snack and/or water bottle.

Come learn woodturning on an electric lathe! Students will use local wood to make a flower vase and lidded box with a decorative finial. These projects are great for beginners learning how to make beads and coves. Woodturners with experience are also welcome and can refine their techniques.

An additional fee for materials provided by your instructor for this workshop is estimated at $25.00 THIS FEE IS PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. Material fees may change depending on the number of participants and price of materials at the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees.

About Instructor: Since starting woodturning in 2016, Christine had a special interest in cremation urns, hollow forms and lidded boxes, she began working full-time as a turner in 2018. She has been featured in the AAW newsletter 17 times in 3 years, is an active member of The Southern Highlands Craft Guild, and is scheduled to teach at the John C. Campbell Folk School in May 2025. She loves adding color or dyes and embellishing her work with relief carvings which has changed her direction to more sculptural work.
