Students Please Bring:
- Please bring a thumb guard and carving glove. (Can be purchased at the John C. Campbell Folk School Craft Shop or found online)
- Students can bring their favorite carving knives if they have them, Carolyn will also have some available for use
- Note taking materials
- (Optional) A snack and/or water bottle, filtered water is available in the classroom
In this workshop you’ll learn different knife holds, how to mark out proportions, knife safety and how to keep a sharp edge. Students will get to pick between carving faces on a wooden spool or carving a small animal from a wood blank of their choice, in the Brasstown style. Choose between a cat, squirrel, or rabbit.
Even though it’s after the Holiday season, finished spools make great ornaments. Santa spools are a well-known ornament traditionally made by the Brasstown Carvers.
An additional fee for materials provided by your instructor for this workshop is estimated at $10.00 THIS FEE IS PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. Material fees may change depending on the number of participants and price of materials at the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees.

About Instructor: Carolyn Anderson is a Brasstown Carver and member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild. She has been carving for over 45 years! She enjoys introducing others to the Brasstown Carving tradition by demonstrating the style at schools, festivals, and at The Folk Art Center in Asheville. An active member of her community, Carolyn is very involved with the Brasstown Community Center, the Brasstown Farmer’s Market and various events and carving meet ups at the John C. Campbell Folk School. When Carolyn is not carving, she’s out walking in nature looking for sticks to carve, spending time in her garden, or enjoying time with family and friends.
