Learn about growing your own edible mushrooms with this hands-on workshop. We will discuss different methods of mushroom propagation, and you will learn the process of log inoculation through inoculating tulip poplar logs with oyster mushroom spawn. We will discuss all needed supplies and how to match the right mushroom species to the right tree species. You will leave with the knowledge and skills to successfully grow mushrooms like shiitake, oyster, and lion’s mane on your own.

Experience needed: All levels are welcome. No experience required.

Location: This workshop takes place on the John C. Campbell Folk School Campus. Students will meet at Open House to check in on the day of the workshop. This is located in the Garden and is number 5 on the Campus Map 

Students Please Bring:

  • Garden Gloves
  • Clothes that can get dirty.
  • Note taking materials.
  • (Optional) A snack and/or water bottle. Filtered water is available in the classroom.

An additional fee for materials provided by your instructor for this workshop is estimated at $0.00. THIS FEE IS PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. Material fees may change depending on the number of participants and price of materials at the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees.

About Instructor: Jason Ebinger has been farming organically for the past ten years. He has worked in a variety of settings including community based urban farm projects, CSA farms, and for the past five seasons as the Folk School gardener. He is passionate about utilizing new and old technologies to grow food using regenerative methods that promote health for people and the planet. Some of his favorite things to teach about are seed starting and plant propagation, the use of cover crops, and weed management.
