All levels are welcome. No experience required. Some hand strength and coordination is required as students will be using a foot treadle to make their brooms. 

Students Please Bring:

  • Apron or clothes that can get dirty
  • Note taking materials.
  • (Optional) A snack and/or water bottle. Filtered water is available in the classroom.

Using no machinery, you will learn to make a long-lasting whisk broom using natural and hand-dyed broomcorn fiber. Students will learn the highly versatile Japanese bundling techniques. These workhorse whisks also make great gifts and are both utilitarian and beautifully decorative hand brooms. Some hand strength and coordination is required as students will be using a foot treadle to make their brooms. 

There will be a 1- hour lunch break. Bring a sack lunch or explore local dining options.

An additional fee for materials provided by your instructor for this workshop is estimated at $30.00 THIS FEE IS PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. Material fees may change depending on the number of participants and price of materials at the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees.

About Instructor: Max (Mark) Hendry is a full-time artisan and instructor of historic handcraft, specializing in brooms & basketry, with a focus on working with natural, ecologically harvested, renewable materials. With decades of experience as a professional teacher of fine and performing arts in private, public, and magnet schools, Max travels across the country, teaching all levels and ages of students from beginner to advanced, ages 3 to 93. He is director and resident artist for Mountain Heritage Handcraft located in the mountains of North Georgia.
