Location: This workshop takes place on the John C. Campbell Folk School Campus. Please arrive at the Enameling Studio the day of the workshop to check in. It is number 16 on the  Campus Map

Ages: 18 and Up

All levels are welcome. No experience required.

Create holiday ornaments in the John C. Campbell Folk School Enamel Studio. Cut copper foil and form/fold into stars, bells and other 3-D shapes. Then apply enamel by painting and sifting colorful glass powder onto your copper shapes. Fire in a 1500-degree kiln for one to three minutes, and experiment with layering color, design and texture with multiple firings. Expect to make several ornaments to decorate your home and tree.

*This workshop takes place on the main campus in Brasstown while a regular weekend class session is happening. You will go directly to the Enameling Studio to check in on the day of the workshop.

*There will be a 1 1/2 hour lunch break. Bring a sack lunch or explore local dining options. If you would like to purchase lunch on campus, please call Olive’s Porch after registering for the workshop : 828-837-1885 ext. 142. You will not be able to purchase lunch less than 24 hours prior to the workshop, this is to help the Dining Hall prepare an accurate food count.

Students Please Bring:

  • Dust mask, for sifting enamel powder. N-95 recommended.
  • Covered water bottle
  • Apron
  • Note taking materials.

An additional fee for materials provided by your instructor for this workshop is estimated at $20.00. THIS FEE IS PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. Material fees may change depending on the number of participants and price of materials at the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees.

About Instructor: Kay Patterson learned engraving and metalsmithing from her husband, Tom, whose family owned a retail jewelry store with a full-service shop. She joined Tom teaching metal classes at the Folk School in 2003 and has continued to serve as an assistant and instructor in many classes. Kay teaches enamel, combined with forging and engraving metal with a focus on using recycled metals. She is the Folk School's Creative Programming Advisor in Enameling. Kay currently divides her time among metals, enamel, and fiber, mostly making things to wear and puttering around the gardens and woods.
