The Half Square Triangle is a true quilting classic, and once you learn it, you’ll start seeing it everywhere. This versatile little block is the building block behind countless quilt designs, making it a skill you’ll come back to again and again. Whether you’re just starting your quilting journey or ready to stretch your creative wings, Half Square Triangles are a must-have in your toolbox. In this class, we’ll explore several different ways to make Half Square Triangle blocks, so you can discover the method that works best for you. Along the way, you’ll see how Half Square Triangles can be mixed and matched to create pinwheels, stars, optical twists, mountains, trees, zigzags, and so much more. They’re also perfect for accent blocks and can make stunning quilt borders.
There will be a 1-hour lunch break. Bring a sack lunch or explore local dining options.
Experience needed: Students should have taken Jan’s Intro to Sewing workshop at Olive’s Porch or have similar skills including they be familiar with a sewing machine and sewing tension, know how to thread a bobbin and sew in a straight line. Some familiarity with rotary cutting is helpful but not required.
Students Please Bring:
- Fabric: 100% Cotton fabric in a variety of colors (the instructor will reach out before the workshop to discuss options). Fat quarters will work great!
- 100% Cotton neutral thread (medium gray is recommended).
- Reading glasses, if you use them (Olive’s Porch has some Ott Lights with magnification if needed during the workshop).
- Note taking materials.

- Plan to use an Olive’s Porch sewing machine for the workshop; Jan will set them up. If you have an easily portable, ready-to-use sewing machine that you’d prefer, you can bring it for use in the workshop but please let the instructor know when checking in on fabric choices ahead of time, you may need to arrive earlier to set up your machine.
- Olive’s Porch has irons & ironing boards, rotary cutters & mats.
- Although Olive’s Porch has pins, rulers, seam rippers, and quilt clips you’re welcome to bring them if you have them but please make sure to label them with your initials.
