All levels are welcome. No experience required.
Molten Metal, Made Simple! Dive into the fundamentals of sandcasting in this hands-on class designed for makers of all levels. Over the course of this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of mold-making and metal casting while creating a series of small sample pieces—each exploring a different casting technique. We’ll work with recycled aluminum, or bronze, using a portable foundry. Whether you’re curious about small-batch production, original artwork, or crafting custom tools for other craft, sandcasting offers an efficient, accessible way to bring your metal ideas to life.
Location: This workshop takes place on the John C. Campbell Folk School Campus. Please arrive at the Clay Spencer Blacksmith Forge the day of the workshop to check in. It is number 9 on the Campus Map
There will be a 1- hour lunch break. Bring a sack lunch or explore local dining options.
Students Please Bring:
- Note taking materials.
- (Optional) A snack and/or water bottle. Filtered water is available in the classroom.
An additional fee for materials provided by your instructor for this workshop is estimated at $25.00. THIS FEE IS PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop. Material fees may change depending on the number of participants and price of materials at the workshop. *Payment by cash or check is required for materials fees.

About Instructor: Jay Reddish is a metalsmith and educator specializing in sand casting with recycled materials. With over a decade of teaching experience, they create functional sculpture and jewelry inspired by history, fantasy, and the natural world. Through their workshops, Jay empowers students to explore sustainable practices and explore the creative potential of upcycled metals.
